Fox Valley Pony Club

Raised in Madison, Wisconsin, Jennifer has over 30 years of horse experience. Her first horse was a birthday present, an Arab/Shetland pony named BooBoo . . . the best present a 9-year-old, horse crazy kid could have. Since that moment Jennifer has had a horse or two in her life. In college she attended UW-River Falls for one year and took all the horse courses offered including the two-year-old training class. She then transferred to UW-Madison and earned an associate degree as a Certified and Licensed Veterinary Technician. Jennifer worked for a mixed animal practice and for the UW Veterinary School for several years before returning to school to get a degree in Special Education. After marrying and moving to Kansas with her husband and son, Jennifer never thought she would want her own barn ("way too much work"). After boarding all those horse years (8 to 10 barns) in Wisconsin and Kansas, she had the desire to build a small boarding facility when her family settled in one spot. Jennifer works full-time at the barn as well as having an awesome supportive husband and two great kids to care for.

Bittersweet Farm offers a beautiful and safe environment for your horse and you to enjoy. The facility is a small, family-owned operation, not a big board barn. At the most we board 12 horses. The Kraemer family lives on site. The barn and ALL the turnout areas are in full view from the house. The property is well maintained and SAFE.

Each horse gets individual attention and is placed with the right group of horses for turnout (private turnout is also available). The farm feeds Safe Choice by Nutrena, twice a day 9 to 12 hours apart. The hay we feed is a consistent high quality grass hay from the same supplier and field. The hay is tested yearly with each new hay season to ensure the best quality.

Turnout 24/7

The 2008 summer season we tried a new turnout procedure at Bittersweet Farm. During the months of May through October, horses that could stay out all night did. The horses LOVED it.

With 24/7 turnout, we have found the horses are much happier in their work. The horses are able to roam and graze as a small herd. They are healthier and have far fewer behavioral problems and stall vices have virtually disappeared. Horses do come in at night if there is a 50% or greater chance of rain/storm or if it is just nasty out.

Night turnout may not be for every horse. A few horses in our care have demonstrated they either don't like night turnout (anxiety pacing or bug issues) or have health issues associated with the wet ground and need to come in and "dry off." We want the horse to be comfortable and enjoy life – to be a happy horse.
